About Peter Newman

My passion for trains came through osmosis - the mainline of the CPR ran through our backyard in Toronto. My mother used to complain that the trains made our house rumble - I thought it was really neat! I loved watching the diesels struggle up the grade towards Agincourt Yard. And then one day everything changed... I saw CPR 4-6-0, #1057, steam past! My interest in trains has introduced me to other passions, including photography and model railroading. I think the best part, however, has been meeting all of the wonderful railway enthusiasts along the way - many who became friends and even mentors in my life. Most of my railway photographs were taken between 1975 and 1979. My camera was the Pentax K1000 - most of my images were taken in black and white. To keep costs low, the films were processed in my own darkroom. I hope you'll enjoy the images!

Further to Mr. Mooney's great shot of the Mount Albert station (http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=43929), here's another offering. Unfortunately, I never kept any written records of my adventures but I'm guessing this is the fall of '78.

One has to wonder who would be so crazy as to drive a 1976 VW Beetle with a modified Rolls Royce front. Well, ummm, that would be me. Yes, at sixteen years of age I thought it was a pretty cool set of wheels - my first car actually. That silly Beetle lasted around 5 years until all that held it together was rust. I certainly had my share of adventures in it. As I recall, the Rolls Royce modification came with a great looking hood ornament (The Spirit of Ecstacy). On the first day I installed it I parked in downtown Toronto near Ryerson for about 30 minutes - I guess I probably don't need to finish the rest of that story. Grrr...

It looks like the folks at the Cannington Historical Society Museum have done a terrific job restoring and displaying this little gem (the building, not the car). It is wonderful that stations like Mount Albert have survived and are available for all to enjoy.

I have to admit that visually I appreciate this old image – a lot of clutter and yet so many interesting and simple lines. I’ve always enjoyed the honesty of B&W photography on a fully manual 35mm camera.

If I recall correctly this image was captured in the summer of '76 - not long after the CN Tower first opened. Built in December 1956, GP9 #4521 was rebuilt as GP9RM in '85 and renumbered to #7007.

I grew up in Toronto but departed 30 years ago. After some stops along the way I eventually settled in Florida. My amazing daughter, Claire, finished high school two years ago and asked if she could head north to Toronto to study photography at Ryerson. It was a blast for me to revisit and explore my hometown! Obviously, so much of the city is different since I snapped this photo nearly 44 years ago.

Would anyone care to identify some of the changes? Perhaps a Time Machine Challenge candidate??

So where am I? Great question! I never considered taking any notes back then. After all, 40 years ago nobody could have fathomed that images could be shared globally with just a few keystrokes.

I thought that this photograph might have been taken in the Niagara Falls region. I showed it to Arnold and he politely wondered if I might be smoking crack cocaine. He didn't recognize the locale. It likely had some connection to a 6060 fan trip. Anybody else have any guesses?

Anyways, it is a throwback to the past. An interesting mix of paint schemes during the VIA transition.

I believe this image was taken at Leaside in the late fall of ’75. If I’m correct, SD40-2, 5747 had just recently entered service. Trailing unit SD40, 5530, was nine years old.

Built in 1966, GP40TC #9806 is shown approaching Union Station. The locomotive was first numbered as 606 and later carried #505. In 1988, she went to Amtrak.

Built in 1959 by MLW, S-11 #6617 adds a little muscle on the steep grade towards Agincourt. The locomotive would be retired in 1982.
